Stanza 1

மைம்மரு பூங்குழற் கற்றைதுற்ற வாணுதன் மான்விழி மங்கையோடும்
பொய்ம்மொழி யாமறை யோர்களேத்தப் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எம்மிறை யேயிமை யாதமுக்க ணீசவெ னேசவி தென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
மெய்ம்மொழி நான்மறை யோர்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

maimmaru poongkuzha'r ka'r'raithu'r'ra vaa'nuthan maanvizhi mangkaiyoadum
poymmozhi yaama'rai yoarka'laeththap pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
emmi'rai yaeyimai yaathamukka 'neesave naesavi thenkolsollaay
meymmozhi :naanma'rai yoarmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

The supreme being who is permanent in Pukali along with the young maid who has looks like the deer, bright forehead and dense collections of black tresses of hair, to be praised by the brahmins who never utter falsehood!
our Lord! God who has three eyes that do not wink!
one who has love towards me!
what is the reason for your desiring to remain in the temple which descended from heaven in Miḻalai where the brahmins who are versed in all the four Vētam-s which contain truthful words, are in great numbers. please tell me; 

There is an anecdote about this patikam.
Ñāṉacampantar was staying in Tiruvīḻimiḻalai after worshipping in some shrines nearby.
The brahmins from Cīkāḻi went to Tiruvīḻimiḻai to request him to return to Cīkāḻi, because it was a long time since he left his native place.
He replied, we shall start for Kaḻi getting the permission of the Lord in Vīḻimiḻalai.
In that night Lord of Kāḻi appeared in his dream and said we shall show you the form in which we are in Kāḻi, here itself.
After daybreak, Campantar worshipped the Lord in Vīḻimiḻalai and to his wonder he found that the Lord gave him audience as it was in Kāḻi.
These ten verses were sung in the form of questioning the Lord for his presence in Miḻai.

[Tirumāl worshipped Civaṉ in this shrine daily with thousand lotus flowers; on the last day one flower was missing; so Māl engrafted his eye and finished the worship.
The Lord granted him a discus which he wished.
In return for this benefaction, Māl had one vimāṉam constructed in heaven and it descended on the earth in which Civaṉ resided permanently.]
[That a vimaṉam descended from heaven is mentioned in the hymns of Campantar, Appar and Cuntarar.
They are too numerous to be quoted.
It is also mentioned in a decade on Miḻai in Tiruvaicaippa, verses 1 and 5.]

With deer-eyed Uma, her forehead glowing, locks flowing,
Bunched in tones auburn fair, our Lord, you are in Pukali,
Where faithful andhanars hail your virtues compact.
O, wink-less trine eyed Love mine ! Why aside at Mizhalai
Down from the skies, on Maal's landing the vault
Where Vedics of Speech, Speech, are posed in verity.!

 

Stanza 2

கழன்மல்கு பந்தொடம் மானைமுற்றில் கற்றவர் சிற்றிடைக் கன்னிமார்கள்
பொழின்மல்கு கிள்ளையைச் சொற்பயிற்றும் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எழின்மல ரோன்சிர மேந்தியுண்டோ ரின்புறு செல்வமி தென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
மிழலையுள் வேதிய ரேத்திவாழ்த்த விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

kazhanmalku pa:nthodam maanaimu'r'ril ka'r'ravar si'r'ridaik kannimaarka'l
pozhinmalku ki'l'laiyais so'rpayi'r'rum pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
ezhinmala roansira mae:nthiyu'ndoa rinpu'ru selvami thenkolsollaay
mizhalaiyu'l vaethiya raeththivaazhththa vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

young unmarried girls who have a small waist and have learnt the games of playing with moluccabeans, large number of balls, ammāṉai, and small winnows.
The supreme being who stays permanently in Pukali where they train the parrots that abound in parks to speak words!
what is the idea of this wealth of deriving pleasure by eating in the skull of Piraman who is seated in a beautiful lotus, holding it in your hand?
please tell me the reason for desiring the temple which descended from heaven, for the brahmins in Miḻalai to praise and bless you.

O, One of all virtue compact brilliant in Pukali, where wasp-waisted
Virgins good in games of kazhangu, pandu, ammanai,murril, train
The grove- parrots to parrot their speech. O, Rich One raving to eat 
From the fair lotus-lounged Brahma-cupola-bowl! Won't you unveil
Why you preferred to come to the off-sky temole in Mizhalai
Where Vedics praise and panegyrize to venerate the descent?

Stanza 3

கன்னிய ராடல் கலந்துமிக்க கந்துக வாடை கலந்துதுங்கப்
பொன்னியன் மாட நெருங்குசெல்வப் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
இன்னிசை யாழ்மொழி யாளோர்பாகத் தெம்மிறை யேயிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
மின்னிய னுண்ணிடை யார்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

kanniya raadal kala:nthumikka ka:nthuka vaadai kala:nthuthungkap
ponniyan maada :nerungkuselvap pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
innisai yaazhmozhi yaa'loarpaakath themmi'rai yaeyithu venkolsollaay
minniya nu'n'nidai yaarmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

the god who is permanent in wealthy Pukali where the storeys made of superior gold, are close to each other and where the games of unmarried girls and the rows of houses in streets where they play with balls are combined our Lord who has on one half a lady who speaks words as sweet as the sweet music produced in yāḻ.
please tell me what is the reason for this act of desiring to stay in the temple which descended from heaven in Miḻalai where ladies who have a minute waist like lightning are moving in large numbers?

O, One of virtue, all compact prevaling in the rich Pukali,
Where splendid golden halls in number stand aloft
Down the streets for virgins to play the game of balls!
O, our Lord with Uma of yaazh-sweet melic speech
On your part! Would you tell for what you desire the Mizhalai 
Vimana sky-send where flash waisted women throng to gaze? 

Stanza 4

நாகப ணந்திக ழல்குன்மல்கு நன்னுதன் மான்விழி மங்கையோடும்
பூகவ னம்பொழில் சூழ்ந்தவந்தண் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
ஏகபெ ருந்தகை யாயபெம்மா னெம்மிறை யேயிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
மேகமு ரிஞ்செயில் சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

:naakapa 'na:nthika zhalkunmalku :nannuthan maanvizhi mangkaiyoadum
pookava nampozhil soozh:nthava:ntha'n pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
aekape ru:nthakai yaayapemmaa nemmi'rai yaeyithu venkolsollaay
maekamu rignseyil soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

God who stays permanently in the beautiful and cool pukaḻi surrounded by parks and groves of areca-palms, with a young lady who has looks like deer, bright and perfect forehead, and a waist like the hood of the cobra!
the great one who is the person of unique and high dignity!
our Lord!
please tell me; what is the reason for this act of desiring to reside in miḻalai which has a temple descended from heaven, and surrounded by a wall of enclosure against which clouds rub themselves?

Forelaps shaming serpent-hoods,foreheads fair and fawn eyes
Of Parvati with you, at Kaazhi green with lush areca fronds--
There you dwell, all virtue compact. O, Primordial Lord, 
With parallel none!O, our Supreme! Spell out
Why fond you are of grounded vimana from off the skies
In cloud be-slobbering fort-girt Mizhalai?

Stanza 5

சந்தள றேறுத டங்கொள்கொங்கைத் தையலொ டுந்தள ராதவாய்மைப்
புந்தியி னான்மறை யோர்களேத்தும் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எந்தமை யாளுடை யீசவெம்மா னெம்மிறை யேயிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
வெந்தவெண் ணீறணிவார்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

sa:ntha'la 'rae'rutha dangko'lkongkaith thaiyalo du:ntha'la raathavaaymaip
pu:nthiyi naanma'rai yoarka'laeththum pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
e:nthamai yaa'ludai yeesavemmaa nemmi'rai yaeyithu venkolsollaay
ve:nthave'n 'nee'ra'nivaarmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

God who stays permanently in Pukali which is worshipped by brahmins who are well-versed in the four Vētam-s, with their minds which do not show slackening from truth on account of having chanted the Vētam-s very often, with a young lady who has broad breasts on which is coated profusely the semi-liquid of sandal paste wealthy one who receives us as your protege for generations from time immemorial!
our father!(Lord)! Lord who stays in everything!
please tell me; what is the reason for the act of desiring to reside in the temple which descended from heaven in Miḻalai which has devotees who smear their bodies with the well burnt white sacred ash?

O, One of all virtue compact effulgent in Pukali
With Uma of ample breasts in sandal corset
Where Vedic andhanars unfallen praise your holiness!
O, Taker of all from start-less Time! o, Supreme! Transcendent!
Why not tell why took to Mizhalai vimana sky-laid
Where flourish servitors wearing holy ash in faith?

Stanza 6

சங்கொளி யிப்பி சுறாமகரந் தாங்கி நிரந்து தரங்கமேன்மேற்
பொங்கொலி நீர்சுமந் தோங்குசெம்மைப் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எங்கள்பி ரானிமை யோர்கள்பெம்மா னெம்மிறை யேயிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
வெங்கதிர் தோய்பொழில் சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

sangko'li yippi su'raamakara:n thaangki :nira:nthu tharangkamaenmae'r
pongkoli :neersuma:n thoangkusemmaip pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
engka'lpi raanimai yoarka'lpemmaa nemmi'rai yaeyithu venkolsollaay
vengkathir thoaypozhil soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

the Lord who resided permanently in Pukaḻi which, by the water of more and more rising sound of the waves which carries in a row the shark, colourful oysters, and conches, increases in eminence!
our benefactor!
the noble one among tēvar!
our Lord who stays in everything!
please tell me; what is the reason for your desiring the temple that descended from heaven in Miḻalai which is surrounded by parks with which the sun comes into contact?

O, virtuous one of Pukali pure with the rise and roar
Of back waters rushed in by tidal sea wave bearing
Shark, mackerel, chanks, oyster pearls agleam!
Our Lord, Head of the celestials! oOur Transcendent!
Say why you prefer Mizhalai's sky-laid shrine
Surrounded by sun-kissed floral arborets.

Stanza 7

காமனெ ரிப்பிழம் பாகநோக்கிக் காம்பன தோளியொ டுங்கலந்து
பூமரு நான்முகன் போல்வரேத்தப் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
ஈமவ னத்தெரி யாட்டுகந்த வெம்பெரு மானிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
வீமரு தண்பொழில் சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

kaamane rippizham paaka:noakkik kaampana thoa'liyo dungkala:nthu
poomaru :naanmukan poalvaraeththap pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
eemava naththeri yaadduka:ntha vemperu maanithu venkolsollaay
veemaru tha'npozhil soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

Having burnt Kāmaṉ to become a mass of fire by gazing at him (with the eye on the forehead) Being united with a lady who has shoulders like bamboo.
the god who stayed in pukali permanently to be praised by the brahmins who are comparable to Piramaṉ of four faces seated in the lotus!
our eminent one who danced gladly in the fire in the creamation ground.
please tell me; what is the reason for this act of desiring the temple which descended from heaven in Miḻalai which is surrounded by cool parks of many flowers.

[God who burnt Cupid is united with a lady, the god who danced in a none too pleasant place as the creamation ground is fond of Miḻalai which is surrounded by parks] 

O, One of all virtue compact, praised by the Four-faced
Upon lotus at Pukali, with lithe bamboo shouldered Uma,
Flaming Manmatha up by lighter-eye! O, Our Lord 
Eager to bathe in charnel fires! Speak up why
You love Mizhalai temple sky-begot engirt by
Flower flooded cool green grove lined arbors.

Stanza 8

இலங்கையர் வேந்தெழில் வாய்த்ததிண்டோள் இற்றல றவ்விர லொற்றியைந்து
புலங்களைக் கட்டவர் போற்றவந்தண் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
இலங்கெரி யேந்திநின் றெல்லியாடு மெம்மிறை யேயிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
விலங்கலொண் மாளிகை சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

ilangkaiyar vae:nthezhil vaayththathi'ndoa'l i'r'rala 'ravvira lo'r'riyai:nthu
pulangka'laik kaddavar poa'r'rava:ntha'n pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
ilangkeri yae:nthi:nin 'relliyaadu memmi'rai yaeyithu venkolsollaay
vilangkalo'n maa'likai soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

Having pressed gently with the toes to make the king of the inhabitants of ilankai, to weep aloud as his beautiful and strong shoulders were split and severed.
to be praised by those who weeded out the desires of the five senses.
God who resided permanently in pukali!
our master who dances at night holding a bright fire!
please tell me; what is the reason for your desiring the temple which descended from heaven in miḻalai, surrounded by shining mansions which are like mountains.

O, One of all virtue compact in fair temperate Pukali,
Praised by ascetics free from five-sensorial snare,
With a gentle foot-finger press, didn't you make Lankan Head Ravan.s
Rugged shoulders crack and wail?Armed with a torch
Of flame, O, Lord, Dancer at charnel in pitch dark Be frank why you long
To be in Mizhalai's sky-trailed temple girt by lustrous hill high mansions.

Stanza 9

செறிமுள ரித்தவி சேறியாறுஞ் செற்றதில் வீற்றிருந் தானுமற்றைப்
பொறியர வத்தணை யானுங்காணாப் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எறிமழு வோடிள மான்கையின்றி யிருந்தபி ரானிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
வெறிகமழ் பூம்பொழில் சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

se'rimu'la riththavi sae'riyaa'rugn se'r'rathil vee'r'riru:n thaanuma'r'raip
po'riyara vaththa'nai yaanungkaa'naap pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
e'rimazhu voadi'la maankaiyin'ri yiru:nthapi raanithu venkolsollaay
ve'rikamazh poompozhil soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
 
Translation:

God who is permanent in Pukali, who could not be found out by the one who sat majestically on the lotus of close petals, as his seat, having completely destroyed the group of six bad qualities namely pride, anger, lust, parsimony, over-weening and excessive partiality, and the other Māl who is lying on the bed of a cobra which has dots on its hood chief who is without a young deer and a battle-axe thrown on enemies, in your hands!
please tell me; what is the reason of desiring the temple that descended from heaven in Miḻalai surrounded by beautiful parks from which fragrance spreads?

Siva, when He came to bless Sambandar in Pukali, was without His usual appurtenances like the young deer and the battle axe in His hands. He presents the same appearance in Mizhalai also.

O, One of all virtue compact in Pukali unseen by Brahma

On fragrant lotus seat rid of flaws sixfold, lust et.al. and dotted
Snake-bedridden Maal. O, Lord with no mazhu
Nor young fawn in arms!Disclose why
You long to bide at Mizhalai shrine
Sky-released girt by balmy arbors cool

Stanza 10

பத்தர்க ணம்பணிந் தேத்தவாய்த்த பான்மைய தன்றியும் பல்சமணும்
புத்தரு நின்றலர் தூற்றவந்தண் புகலி நிலாவிய புண்ணியனே
எத்தவத் தோர்க்குமி லக்காய்நின்ற வெம்பெரு மானிது வென்கொல்சொல்லாய்
வித்தகர் வாழ்பொழில் சூழ்மிழலை விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பியதே.

paththarka 'nampa'ni:n thaeththavaayththa paanmaiya than'riyum palsama'num
puththaru :nin'ralar thoo'r'rava:ntha'n pukali :nilaaviya pu'n'niyanae
eththavath thoarkkumi lakkaay:nin'ra vemperu maanithu venkolsollaay
viththakar vaazhpozhil soozhmizhalai vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpiyathae.
  
Translation:

in addition to being appropriately situated to be worshipped and praised by the group of votaries.
many camaṇar and buddhits to spread calumny without stopping.
God who stayed permanently in beautiful and cool pukali.
our great one who is the object in view for those who perform different kinds of penance!
please tell me; what is the reason for the act of desiring the temple that descended from heaven in Miḻalai which is surrounded by parks and in which people of deep knowledge live?

On the one hand, His votaries praise Him. He does not feel elated. On the other hand, the Jains and the Buddhists spread calumny about Him. He does not feel hurt either.

O, One of all virtue compact resplendent in fair cool Pukali!
For devotees to praise and buddhas and samanas to blame!
O, our Lord fit to attain by askesis manifold, whatever!
Say why crave to stay in Mizhalai temple sky-granted
Where versatile scholars live convivial
And verdant arbors abound in the outskirts.

Stanza 11

விண்ணிழி கோயில் விரும்பிமேவும் வித்தக மென்கொ லிதென்றுசொல்லிப் 
புண்ணிய னைப்புக லிந்நிலாவு பூங்கொடி யோடிருந் தானைப்போற்றி 
நண்ணிய கீர்த்தி நலங்கொள்கேள்வி நான்மறை ஞானசம் பந்தன்சொன்ன 
பண்ணியல் பாடல்வல் லார்களிந்தப் பாரொடு விண்பரி பாலகரே.

vi'n'nizhi koayil virumpimaevum viththaka menko lithen'rusollip 
pu'n'niya naippuka li:n:nilaavu poongkodi yoadiru:n thaanaippoa'r'ri 
:na'n'niya keerththi :nalangko'lkae'lvi :naanma'rai gnaanasam pa:nthansonna 
pa'n'niyal paadalval laarka'li:nthap paarodu vi'npari paalakarae.
   
Translation:

saying in the form of question the reason for the mystery of dwelling with desire in the temple which descended from heaven.
having praised Lord Civaṉ who was residing permanently in pukali with a lady comparable to a beautiful creeper.
those who are capable of the verses set to music, sung by Ñāṉacampantaṉ who knew the four vētams, had knowledge aquired by listening to words of wisdom and fame that reached him unsought, will be rulers of this earth and heaven

One of all virtue compact indwelling in Pukali
Is with young liana-like Uma. Praising Him,
Asking why He \'s mysteriously in love of Mizhalai
Temple, native to skies, Gnanasambandhan of fame,
Of goodly learning, of Vedic stock, sang the melic hymns.
Whoever chant these shall rule celestis and this mundi.
